Petaling Jaya, 16 July 2004 - Menopause, a time in a woman's life when she stops menstruating for more than 12 consecutive months. Each woman experiences menopause in her own unique and individual way but the most common symptom is hot flushes. Other symptoms may include mood swings, a decrease in bone mass, changes in the body's metabolism and sleep disturbances. To help a woman adjust to the changes her body faces during menopause and to better manage the symptoms associated with it, NutriliteTM, the world's leading brand of vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements*, has launched its new Black Cohosh and Soy product to the Malaysian market. Dr. Chioma Ikonte, Research Scientist, Supplement Product Development from Access Business Group, Amway Corporation's sister company which manufactures NutriliteTM, who was in Malaysia today said: "Menopause is not a disease and therefore should not be treated as one. At Access Business Group, we have worked to develop an exclusive formula that will help women better manage menopause in a natural, healthy supplement form." "With the introduction and availability of this new product, we are able to offer women the means to plan ahead and prepare themselves for the menopausal phase of their lives," continued Ikonte. Black cohosh was historically used in North American Indian medicine as a treatment for rheumatism, malaria and gynecological disorders. In the 19th century in America, Black Cohosh was a common home remedy for rheumatism, fever, as a diuretic and to induce menstruation. Today, studies have shown that black cohosh, at the doses indicated has been effectively used to relieve the symptoms of menopause. Explaining how black cohosh works to ease menopausal symptoms, Dr. Ikonte said: "With the onset of menopause, the signals between the pituitary gland and the ovaries diminish, resulting in a slow down of the production of the hormone estrogen and an increase in luteinizing hormone production which results in menopausal symptoms like hot flushes, sleep disturbances, headaches and mood swings. Studies have shown that black cohosh decreases the symptoms associated with increasing levels of luteinizing hormones, by modulating these luteinizing hormones." Each NutriliteTM Black Cohosh and Soy tablet consists of black cohosh, soy isoflavones, soy protein, coupled with Vitamin C from acerola cherry extract. On the inclusion of soy in the product, Ikonte highlighted that soy isoflavones have the the ability to bind to estrogen receptors thereby mimicking the body's estrogen and that helps suppress the symptoms of menopause. "Within five to seven years following menopause, a woman can lose up to 3% of her bone density due to a decrease in estrogen production. Studies have indicated that the naturally occurring isoflavones within soy has a potentially protective effect on retaining bone mineral density with the onset of menopause," said Dr. Ikonte. Without artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, this nutritional supplement also contains 25mg of citrus bioflavanoids for added nutritional benefit. NutriliteTM Black Cohosh and Soy is available from authorized Amway distributors at RM123.00 (Peninsular Malaysia) and RM129.00 (East Malaysia) for a bottle of 90 tablets.
