Sibu, 12 June 2004 - Main Board-listed Amway (Malaysia) Holdings Berhad (Amway) today officially opened its sixth regional distribution center (RDC) in East Malaysia, bringing the total number of RDCs to 11 nationwide, including Brunei. The launch in Sibu, which was officiated by Amway ’s Managing Director Mr. Low Han Kee, marks the company’s first of a series of RDC expansion following an announcement to improve and expand overall infrastructure worth about RM50 million at the Annual General Meeting back in January. With the last RDC opening in Brunei 11 years ago, the opening in Sibu is viewed as timely – to increase Amway’s presence in the local market, capitalize on the strong growth potential, and to provide continued and improved support to its distributors. Prior to this, Amway has five RDCs in East Malaysia – Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Sandakan (previously relocated from Tawau), Miri and Brunei. Speaking to distributors at the launch, Mr. Low said: “We believe the time is right to increase Amway’s presence and Sibu has provided us that opportunity. When the company announced its plans to expand its number of RDCs at its Annual General Meeting in January of this year, we had planned for a pick-up center in Sibu. As you can see, we have since changed that to a full-fledged RDC with complete facilities because we felt that the growth potential was strong in Sibu.” Prior to the official launch, the RDC has been opened for business since early May with an overwhelming response from Amway distributors. The company exceeded its sales forecast on the first day of business by 50%, and sales from the Sibu RDC had surpassed that of some other RDCs in the country by the end of the month. “We heard from leaders who said that an RDC in Sibu will help their business grow tremendously. They started to prove us right from the moment we told them of our intention to bring Amway closer to them in Sibu. Months before the Sibu RDC opened its doors to Amway distributors, sales volume by Sibu distributors placing orders through Kuching had begun to increase. The excitement level was beginning to build and we felt justified that an RDC will meet the expectations of local Amway distributors who wanted to take their business to greater heights.” said Low. The opening of the Sibu RDC is the beginning of Amway’s RM50 million expansion plans. Following this, Amway will be opening RDCs in Melaka and Alor Setar. The company is also looking to relocate its existing RDC in Butterworth and close to identifying a suitable location for its new headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The Sibu RDC is located on the Ground Floor of Lot 3580 & 3581 and First Floor of Lot 3581, Block 7, Sibu Town District, Lorong Mahsuri 4E, 96000 Sibu. Enquiries can also be made to 084 – 218 222.
