What Composites Hair Structure?
1. Cross Section of the Hair Shaft
A cross section of a hair shaft comprises of 3 distinct layers: the 'medulla', the 'cortex' and the 'cuticle'.
The medulla is the core of the hair shaft. The cortex or inner layer gives hair its strength, elasticity and texture. The cuticle is a protective layer of overlapping scales that has a similar role as the cortex.
2. Cell Membrane Complex (CMC)
The cell membrane complex (CMC) is another most important part of the hair structure. It glues the cuticle cells and cortex cells together and keeps the moisture inside. It is compose of structural lipid and protein. In a healthy cuticle the scales lie flat, overlap, creating a smooth surface.
In a damaged hair, the scales on a damaged cuticle are cracked and splayed. The hair is dry and brittle. The surface loses its shine and becomes susceptible to further damage. The condition will continue to exist and increase unless a proper hair regimen is used to correct the damage.
